When the Sun Sets on Routine

Mom’s journey with memory loss

In the years of 2021-2022, my Mom’s short-term memory became increasingly impaired.  Every day conversations started to include her repeating things she already told me and, her inability to remember simple things that just happened, and I could see confusion and concern on her face.

Caring for a loved one with memory issues is challenging. Every day brings new hurdles, unexpected twists, and moments of heartbreaking clarity amidst the fog. One of the most difficult aspects I’ve faced is “sundowning,” the phenomenon where dementia symptoms worsen in the late afternoon and evening. Elders frequently mix up day and night.

A tool for sundowning

Sundowning can be frightening for both the person with dementia and their caregiver. I searched for something that could help my Mom and found the American Lifetime Clock for Seniors.

The large, clear display with the time spelled out in bold letters cuts through the confusion. My Mom could glance at the clock and instantly grasp the time of day, anchoring her in the present moment.

The clock is easy to read and features multiple alarms which can be set for medication reminders and familiar routines.  (We never used this feature, but it was nice to know it is there).

We can still make the most of the new normal

We ended up with 3 of these clocks, one on her nightstand, one by her TV in the living room, and one in the kitchen by her medications.

If you’re facing the challenges of sundowning with a loved one, the American Lifetime clock might be a good tool for you.

Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. There are tools and resources available to help you navigate the darkness and find moments of joy, even as the sun sets on routine.

With love and support,
A daughter, a caregiver, and a believer in the power of simple things to make a world of difference.
